Our Commitment to Net Zero

VRiMS is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 across Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions.

As a UK healthcare education and technology company working with extended reality (XR), immersive learning and artificial intelligence, we recognise our responsibility to understand, manage and reduce the environmental impact of our activities.

Our approach is to measure our carbon footprint, identify opportunities to reduce emissions, implement proportionate carbon reduction measures and review our progress regularly.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan supports the UK Government's Net Zero objectives and the requirements applicable to Carbon Reduction Plans under Procurement Policy Note PPN 006.

Our Carbon Footprint

VRiMS has established 2024 as its baseline year for carbon emissions reporting.

Our emissions are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) and our reporting follows the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting Standard. Scope 2 emissions are calculated using a location-based methodology.

As this is VRiMS’s first Carbon Reduction Plan, the 2024 reporting period represents both the organisation’s baseline year and its latest completed carbon footprint. No later complete reporting-period data was available when this plan was prepared. Future annual updates will report current emissions separately and compare them against the 2024 baseline.

Our Scope 3 reporting includes the relevant categories required for PPN 006, together with additional relevant Scope 3 categories where applicable. Scope 3 emissions have been estimated using the operational information available to VRiMS, including business-travel activity, employee working arrangements, waste activity and equipment transportation. The methodology and underlying data will be refined as the organisation’s carbon-reporting processes develop.

Scope 3 emissions include upstream transportation and distribution (2.45 tCO₂e), waste generated in operations (0.18 tCO₂e), business travel (8.50 tCO₂e), employee commuting (2.80 tCO₂e), and downstream transportation and distribution (1.20 tCO₂e), giving total Scope 3 emissions of 15.13 tCO₂e.

What the Scopes Mean

Scope 1 – Direct emissions
Greenhouse gas emissions arising directly from sources controlled by VRiMS.

Scope 2 – Energy-related indirect emissions
Emissions associated with purchased energy used by our organisation.

Scope 3 – Other indirect emissions
Emissions arising through our wider operations and value chain, including relevant areas such as purchased goods and services, capital goods, transportation and distribution, waste, business travel and employee commuting.

Our Carbon Reduction Target

VRiMS has committed to achieving:

Our target encompasses Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions.

We will use our 2024 emissions as the baseline against which our progress will be assessed.

Our approach prioritises reducing emissions wherever reasonably practicable, rather than relying on carbon offsetting as the primary mechanism for meeting our target.

Carbon Reduction Initiatives Implemented

Since establishing its 2024 baseline, VRiMS has implemented a range of measures to reduce its environmental impact. These include remote-first meetings and training where appropriate, digital collaboration, digital-first documentation, reduced printing, responsible reuse and recycling of electronic equipment, and consideration of remote delivery before undertaking business travel.

VRiMS also uses immersive and extended-reality technologies to support remote medical education, helping reduce some participant and educator travel. These measures will be maintained, monitored and developed as the organisation improves its emissions data and carbon-reduction programme.

How We Will Reduce Our Carbon Emissions

1. Digital and Remote Working

As a digitally focused organisation, VRiMS will continue to use online meetings, remote collaboration and digital working practices where appropriate.

We will seek to reduce unnecessary travel by considering whether meetings, demonstrations, training and other activities can be delivered effectively remotely.

2. Using XR to Support Remote Education

A core area of VRiMS's work is the use of immersive and extended reality technologies to support medical and surgical education.

Where educationally appropriate, remote and synchronised immersive learning can allow participants and educators to interact without needing to travel to the same physical location.

We will continue to explore how these technologies can contribute to more sustainable models of healthcare education and training.

3. Business Travel

We will seek to reduce the environmental impact of business travel by:

• avoiding unnecessary journeys;

• using remote meetings where appropriate;

• combining activities and meetings to reduce repeat journeys;

• considering lower-carbon transport options where practical; and

• monitoring business travel as part of our carbon footprint.

4. Technology and Equipment

As a technology company, computers, VR/MR headsets and associated electronic equipment form an important part of our operations.

We aim to reduce their environmental impact through responsible purchasing, maximising equipment lifespan, reuse where appropriate and responsible disposal or recycling at the end of useful life.

5. Energy Efficiency

We will continue to identify opportunities to reduce electricity and energy consumption associated with our operations and technology.

Energy efficiency will be considered when purchasing new computing, XR and other electronic equipment.

6. Procurement and Our Supply Chain

Scope 3 represents an important component of our carbon footprint.

We will increasingly consider environmental performance when selecting significant suppliers and partners and encourage suppliers to demonstrate their own commitments to carbon reduction.

VRiMS has begun mapping its critical suppliers as part of its wider environmental and sustainability programme.

7. Waste and Circular Economy

VRiMS will seek to minimise waste through:

• digital-first documentation;

• reducing unnecessary printing;

• responsible management of electronic equipment;

• reuse and repair where appropriate;

• responsible recycling; and

• reducing unnecessary packaging and deliveries where practicable.

Measuring Our Progress

Carbon reduction is an ongoing process.

VRiMS will continue to develop the quality and accuracy of its emissions data and will periodically review its carbon footprint against the 2024 baseline of 26.55 tCO₂e.

Our progress will be used to identify areas where further reductions can be achieved and to inform future environmental objectives.

We currently calculate our emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting Standard.

Our emissions verification process is developing, with further verification planned as our environmental reporting matures.
